Our Events
Bogle
5th and 6th March.
Committee member: Matt B
The Bogle event is where we take the scenic route to the extreme!
We challenge you to walk 55 miles, or cycle 78 miles to raise money for your favourite charity. If you don't quite feel up for this, there is also a 12 and 26 mile walk. This walk is 49 years old, and is the only one of its kind that is so old in the North West.
The Bogle walk is a massive test of both mental and physical endurance, which is pretty much 22 hours none stop walking. Last year it was described as the hardest challenge he'd ever done by David Wood. And this is a guy who regularly runs marathons, and has trekked along the great wall of china, all in the name of charity. He managed to complete the walk in 23 hours and 27 minutes. Apparently the blisters kicking in at mile 19 didn't help, as he had to walk on them for a further 36 miles!
The Bogle offers a chance to see parts of Manchester that you wouldn't normally see. The walk is a figure of 8 loop that starts and ends at the University's North Campus by Piccadilly Station. The 55 mile walk starts on Friday evening, and walkers head South to the Airport, then across to Stockport and back up to the city centre where we give you breakfast and the other walkers and cyclists join in. The route then heads up to Bury, across to Bolton and back down through Salford. The cyclists do the second loop 3 times, and those walking 12 miles stop just after Bury.
Don't worry, we help you through this by stopping you every few miles to feed and water you while you get to relax a bit.
Bogle is not just a student event, its an event where the whole community can come together and really make a difference. We have a limited number of places available, so you'll need to get in touch quick. And of course, we're always looking for companies to get involved by donating prizes, supplies for the participants or sponsoring the event. If you think you can get involved, then email Matt or Jenny on bogle@manchesterrag.com, or ring 0161 275 2987 to see how you can get involved.
If you want to take part, then email us for the entry form, fill it out, and send it to us. If you're still not sure get in touch to get some more details. If you are a charity and would like to find out how to get involved, then our charity pack is now here, so just let us know if you want one. If you have any other questions, please email or phone us and we'll give you the answers!

Collections
Committee Member: Flori
This is where we travel the country with buckets to go and raise thousands of pounds. Check out the calendar to see what we've coming up and where.
So far this year, we've raised over £13,000 in collections. We've been to cities such as London, Edinburgh, Dublin and of course Manchester, and collected for Help the Aged, Meningitis Trust and KidsCan. But don't worry if you haven't got involved yet, we've got trips planned to, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Newcastle and London coming up, so you haven't missed out!
We'll also be spending some of Easter in London, collecting for the Anthony Nolan Trust, and Meningitis Research Foundation. The last week of the Easter holidays will see us spend 5 days touring South Wales and South West England, drinking cider, and collecting for Breast Cancer Campaign. Plus, you get to experience a week of Jen's somewhat scary driving! What more could you want from your Easter holidays?
Vietnam
Committee Member: Mairead
Each year we run a volunteering programme for 6 to 8 weeks over the summer. This year, we'll be going out to Vietnam to help Hue Help them teach English in orphanages and blind societies.
While out in Hue, you won't just be helping to teach English, but you'll get a chance to teach the children to swim, and spend time with them playing games and giving them the attention that the orphanages doesn't have time to give them.
To take part in this amazing opportunity, come into the Rag office, and we'll give you all the information and let you know what's happening.
There will also be a chance while you're away to spend some time in Vietnam, getting to know the local cultures and seeing some of the amazing scenery.
Casino
Committee Member: Sonia
If you're organising a ball or event this year for your halls or society, then you can add a bit of sparkle to it with our casino hire service. We have a roulette, poker, black jack and dice tables for you to hire for your event, as well as the croupiers. And what's even better is if you're doing your event for charity, we'll do all this for you for free!
We run this service for anyone who wants it, so whether you're a business, charity, student society, or someone who just fancies having a bit of a different birthday party then email us on info@manchesterrag.com and we'll give you all the information that you need.
There's one rule in casino, the house always wins, so if you want to get involved and be the house, email us or come in to the office and we'll teach you all of the tricks of the trade!
Halls and Societies and MLP
Committee Member: Monica and Paddy
This year we're launching a Halls and Societies competition. This is a pretty simple competition to be honest. It's a competition to see who can raise the most money in a year. The winner then gets a trophy of their very own, and a place on this very website!!
As all the money that is raised through the students union has to go through our books, we thought we'd set up this competition to get you to raise more money. We're giving you loads of ways to do it. If you come on a collection, take part in the Bogle or jailbreak or hold an event in Rag week, then this will all go onto your total. We are in the process of making a whole fundraising pack to help you raise money for Children in Need to get you started, and there'll be plenty more coming up over the year.
If you want to organise your own events, be they pub crawls, cake sales, or your end of year ball and donate the money to charity, this all counts. We don't even mind which charity you decide to support. We'll help you publicise the event, help you organise it, and even count the money afterwards and write you a cheque. If you want to count your own money, you'll just need to show us the reciept to show how much its raised, and as you need to do this anyway (otherwise you're breaking the law), you may as well enter the competition!
Last year, the Law society raised over £1,700 from their pub quiz, and residents of Chandos Hall raised over £2,000 so if you think you can beat this, then have a go! If you don't know who to raise the money for, raise money for the Manchester Community fund, and we'll give it to our charities!
Unfortunately, if you are a charity society, you can't enter. Sorry. But thems the rules (even if they are rubbish!)
If you are on the MLP course, then lots of what you do can count towards your hours, just let us know that you're on the MLP and we'll get your hours signed off. If you don't want to take part in anything that we do for your hours, then you can always organise your own event, and we can help you do this. We can help you with publicity, venues, keeping track of the accounts, counting the money, getting people to help you man the event, and anything else you need. Just come into the office and we'll help you out.
Oh, and don't forget, if you want to use our phone, email, postage, internet or whatever the office is there for you!
