20 Jan 2012 - Six weeks to go! Time to start training

There are only six weeks until this year’s event which means only one thing – time to start training.

Bogle is an endurance event and it requires a combination of physical strength and determination to be successful. We recommend that you buy a good pair of trainers and wear them as much as possible prior to the event to reduce the chances of blisters. The Sweat Shop in the Arndale Centre will be able to give you advice as to what shoes are most appropriate. The entire route is along paved roads, trainers are designed to absorb the shock of a heel hitting a hard surface.

You will also want several good pairs of socks, outdoor shops such as Millets or Cotswolds sell blister socks. The basic principle is that there are two layers of cloth between the shoe and your foot, so these rub together instead of your skin. If you don’t want to splash out on specialist socks, just wear 2 pairs at once.

Once you are armed with the perfect footwear it’s time to get serious about putting in the miles. Think about how far you live from University or Work, if its a couple of miles that’s a great start, if it’s a lot longer why not get off the bus a few stops early and walk the rest of the way. Once you are comfortable with the walk to work start taking a detour and doubling your distance and then try tripling it. Yes it’s January and the weather is horrible, so be sensible; if it’s pouring with rain don’t give yourself a cold.

We live not very far from one of the most beautiful parts of the country – The Peak District. Why not hop on a bus one weekend and head out into the hills so you can get some real miles done. We recommend that you attempt at least one 20 mile walk in the weeks prior to the Stroll to get your body used to the continual impact and motion of the walking.

Walking is a great way to relax and is an opportunity reflect on what life throws at us. So who knows, you might start to enjoy your “training” and make it a habit for life.

07 Jan 2012 - Help build our Wikipedia page

The Bogle Stroll first took place over 50 years, due to the nature of student lead events and people graduating and bringing their knowledge with them a lot of what we know about Bogle is now forgotten (if you can follow).

If you have been involved in previous years in the organisation of the event please visit the Bogle Stroll Wikipedia page, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogle_Stroll, verify what has already been written and add any trivia or facts you have about the event.

03 Jan 2012 - Help promote Bogle 2012

We want as many people as possible to know about Bogle this year, it is a great way to raise money for charity, a brilliant thing for the CV and Karma.

Here’s a few ways you can help promote Bogle 2012 to your friends, family and neighbours:

  • Share our Facebook Event
  • Tweet us @Bogle2012
  • Put posters in your shop/car/flat/house window, just come along to Activities Centre at the Students Union and ask
  • Volunteer for a flyering shift – we can get a permit for pretty much anywhere in Manchester, we just need the people to help us out with it
  • Get a team together to walk it with you, if it’s a local cause let them know you’re doing it and they might get some people to join you
  • Help us out with a Lecture Shout
  • Add Bogle Stroll on Facebook
If you have any ideas as to how you can help us out, please email us bogle@manchesterrag.com

30 Nov 2011 - Manchester RAG Enterprise Competition

Due to the economic times we are going through the event is finding it difficult to raise sponsorship funds from local businesses. Students from the University of Manchester will this week be taking part in the Manchester RAG Enterprise Competition which hopes to use their budding entrepreneurial skills to sell raffle tickets for which the prizes will be various sponsorship opportunities for the event (checkpoint, vehicle, website and mug sponsorship) all entrants will be entitled to a logo on the Sponsors page of the website.

Tickets, priced only £20, will be available for anyone to buy and we hope to raise more than £1000 through the scheme so that we can can keep costs passed on to our participants as low as possible.
