About

Bogle is the longest running sponsored event in the North West, taking the scenic route to the extreme as participants take part in a sponsored walk or cycle around Greater Manchester. This may seem simple enough but this walk takes you the long way round, 55miles to be precise!

Bogle has four different levels of challenge; the 55 mile Stroll, 26 mile Ramble, 12 mile Wander and 78 mile roll, click the links on the right for more detail about each event.

History

The Bogle Stroll started in 1961 when a group of UMIST lecturers missed the last bus home in Lancaster and decided to walk the 55 miles back to Manchester. Along the way some of the group started to hallucinate and saw the Bogle (a Lancashire imp of folklore) , in their imagination the Bogle was taunting the walkers, willing them to give up. It is in defeating the Bogle that the event gets its name.

In the years that followed the event became a highlight of the UMIST calendar with up to 3000 people taking part each year during the 70′s. As roads became busier and A roads turned to motorways the route has changed to now be two loops of Greater Manchester. The event is still based at the UMIST Students Association  (now the University of Manchester Students Union), adjacent to Manchester Picaddilly Station, and takes walkers to Manchester Airport, Stockport, Failsworth, Farnworth and Salford. Still a 55 mile stroll and still an exceptional challenge.

The event is now organised by Manchester RAG as part of UMSU. Entirely volunteer led, the event is produced at a very low cost to enable as many people to take part as possible.

In 2012 we are happy to introduce The Children’s Society as our charity of the year.

 Manchester RAG

Manchester RAG is the fundraising arm of the University of Manchester and UMSU.  It prides itself upon providing the best opportunity to students to engage in activities outside the student bubble. RAG gives rise to many great and exciting possibilities; allowing personal and professional development, whilst  meeting different people  from all walks of life and most importantly raising money for some really worthwhile cause

Last year, we raised £330,000 for local, national and international causes, through a series of large events like Jailbreak, Bogle, Lost and Beerfest and smaller events like pub quizzes, club nights, pub crawls, skydives and shark dives.  We also have an endless schedule of collections around the UK, so it’s a great opportunity to see another city, meet some new people, and raise some much needed funds.First and foremost we raise money for causes in and around the Manchester area, we find it pivotal that we give something back to our local community. In addition to this we are always willing to provide help to any charity that requires our assistance.
