About
Manchester RAG is the fundraising arm of the University of Manchester and UMSU, and it is the best opportunity that you will have when you arrive at university to get outside the student bubble, meet different people and raise money for some really great causes.
Last year, we raised £330,000 for local, national and international causes, through a series of large events like Jailbreak, Bogle, Lost and Beerfest and smaller events like pub quizzes, club nights, pub crawls, skydives and shark dives. We also have an endless schedule of collections around the UK, so it’s a great opportunity to see another city, meet some new people, and raise some much needed cash. We raise money for causes in and around Manchester first and foremost, but if there are charities that need our help, then we’ll be there.
If you’ve never been involved with RAG or charity before, there is no better time than when you’re at university. Feel free to come to one of our events, sign up to be a volunteer or sign up to join in one of our sponsored events. Alternatively you can just pop in to the Activities Centre of the Student’s Union and come have a chat.

Where does the money we raise go?
For some of our major events which require a lot of logistical operations we have nominated charity parters to whom all fund raised are donated. We have selected all our charity partners for our major events in 2011/12 and will approach local charities we feel may benefit if we choose to change these for 2012/13. For our current charity partners please check out the events page and click on each event to find out more!
Many of our events run simply for the benefit of Manchester RAG as an organisation. We do have some operating costs, but these are relatively low. Any profits remaining in the RAG account at the end of the year are distributed to charities who apply on a grant basis of £500, via the RAG Community Fund. We only donate to charities which meet the following criteria:
- Working in the North West
- Do not support animal welfare
- Do not have a party political or religious remit
An application form for the Manchester RAG Community Fund can be downloaded here as of February 2012. For any further questions please email secretary@manchesterag.com
